The Endocannabinoid System

The Endocannabinoid System

Are CBD and THC safe? An age-old question that we’re still asking today. And although we don’t have ALL the answers, we do have a few.

Did you know that our bodies have a system in place to safely process CBD and THC? The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) plays a large role in regulating many bodily functions and involves three core components: endocannabinoids, receptors and enzymes.

The Basics

Endocannabinoids:

Endocannabinoids are molecules produced in the body, similar to cannabinoids produced by cannabis and hemp. Your body produces endocannabinoids as needed to keep your internal functions running smoothly.

Receptors:

Endocannabinoid receptors are found throughout your body. Endocannabinoids bind to these receptors, signalling your ECS to take certain actions, such as providing pain relief or reducing inflammation.

Enzymes:

Enzymes break down the endocannabinoids once they’ve performed their functions.

The Impact

So far we know that Endocannabinoids play a large part in:

  • appetite and digestion
  • metabolism
  • chronic pain
  • inflammation and other immune system responses
  • mood
  • learning and memory
  • motor control
  • sleep
  • cardiovascular system function
  • muscle formation
  • bone remodelling and growth
  • liver function
  • reproductive system function
  • stress
  • skin and nerve function

And, scientists are discovering more every day.

The Link to THC and CBD

Research has found that cannabinoids produced by THC work by binding to these receptors, just as the endocannabinoids in your body would, allowing them to have a full range of effects on your mind and body.

Experts believe that CBD interacts with the ECS by preventing endocannabinoids from being broken down, allowing them to have a stronger effect on the body.

There is much more to be discovered when it comes to the effects that THC and CBD have on our bodies, but we do know that the ECS is doing its part in safely metabolizing these cannabinoids.
